Family Getaway

For Bryan’s birthday this year, we took a little trip up North to Whidbey Island. We are in a nice little rental house, across the street from the beach and just a few minutes from Coupeville. We arrived mid-day Friday and got to watch some real cool storm weather – Barrett LOVED seeing the waves crashing and hearing the loud shorebreak.

Huge waves were crashing loud on the beach. Barrett loved this!

BOOM!

This time of year there will sometimes be a surf break, and Bryan was able to surf! I wasn’t there to take snapshots.

Waves just barely big enough to stand up on.

The whole trip was a blast. Just getting away as a family unit was a blast. We visited Coupeville for some window shopping and lunch, plus a museum visit; we went to Fort Casey to check out the bunkers but it was so stormy with a frigid wind, we didn’t stay long.

Half a Year Flies By

Summer has been trying to arrive, slowly the days are a little warmer and we even have full days of blue skies with sun. Two days before summer solstice, Barrett had her little six month “birthday”. We didn’t do anything to celebrate, but in my mind I played over all the ways she has grown and changed since arriving.

This post is a little diary of recollection for me.

Three days after turning 5 months, we offered you food. It was 1tsp of rice cereal mixed with 3tbsp milk. You actually started getting the hang of it, wanting to feed yourself and then before long, your attention turned to the dog who was happily lapping up what fell on the floor below. Nearly a week later, we offer you banana which you make a scrunched up face at, but you are so adventurous you keep opening up for more.

May 29: you are rolling over as much as you want, like little sideways somersaults. Before this day, you were rolling over every now and then but not with such intent.

June 3 was a Friday, and I was home working on the couch so that I could watch Barrett at the same time. Bryan was on the floor with her, and we see her scoot in a full 360 on her tummy. This was over maybe 15-minute period, but we realized this was the beginning of crawling. The ne

June 5: your first little tooth is coming through! I discovered it because you kept wanting to chew on the book we were reading, so I gave you my thumb to gnaw on. Lower left, in the middle. A few days later its pair was coming up next, and we suspect you have a third coming in soon as I write – you keep waking up crying very loudly, in pain.

On June 5, you started sitting unassisted. Just like that! After nursing in the morning in bed (so mama can get some rest still – you wake up so early!), you started sitting and were very pleased with yourself. I took you down on the floor and set you down there, you were just as sturdy.

June 10 – you taste the avocado! You are adventurous and intrigued. I wanted to record this one, because daddy and me both like the avocado very much.

Every day I sing to you, every day I hug and I kiss you, every day I think I won’t be able to love you any more than I already do. Being your mama is the best thing that ever happened to me, and the time we spend together as a family is always my favorite time. Whether it’s going for a walk in the neighborhood, playing inside or out, or just having time sharing stories with you and daddy, I am so thankful for all we have. We are very fortunate.

Bryan got the hot tub filled up and running! Here we are on Barrett's first day in. She was generally very quiet which is normal when she's in a new situation, taking it in.

I want to use the spoon by myself!

We finally got our P-Patch plot! It's been doing awesome, and Bryan can take all the credit for what comes out of it since I haven't been there more than a handful of times.

Welcoming Summer and a Few Firsts

What a day! Earlier this week it was in the 40′s, raining. Today we wake up to warm breeze and expected temperatures in the high 70′s. That’s just how things go in Seattle. Tomorrow should be more of the same – woohoo!

Yesterday, Barrett officially started “crawling”. On Sunday, we got home from visiting Bryan’s parents (a 5-hour drive to Tillamook), and Barrett was so excited to be home from a fun adventure that she spent an hour rolling over and over and over. Until this day, she had rolled over now and again, but not with such gusto and intent. She has also started doing a modified crab-walk: on her back she will scoot using her feet but no hands. I don’t know how this doesn’t hurt her head or neck but she loves it. So, yesterday, we see a combination of rolling over, crab-walking, and then while she’s on her tummy she will scoot and pull herself sideways. There was one instance where she kept pushing with her hands and she had done a complete 360.

We are no longer safe to leave her in one place.

Today, we had another round of fun firsts. The letter “B” appears to be coming out now, which is really cute. She purses her lips together and pushes air with such might that bubbles come out. She’s also combining the “B” with vowels, so we heard “bbbbbbaaa”. I think I also heard a murmur of “mmmmmaaaahhhh”, she’s really throwing more sounds out. So far we have B, G, M and then all the vowels.

This afternoon we gave Bear a little taste of banana. At first she didn’t really take to it but we were trying straight banana mash and the texture may have been too much. So we mixed with some rice milk (cereal + formula), mashed it all together, and she ended up having a blast. She’s now reaching for the spoon now.

A-Camping We Will Go …

Well, we did it. We got out there and went camping with the baby. This was mostly for my sanity, to prove that the baby is portable enough to take out to the woods for some family outing. I knew this, inside, but for some reason it’s one of those things I had to experience.

Partly due to weather (80% chance of rain) and partly for the convenience of running home if all hell broke loose, our destination was set to Manchester State Park. A five-minute drive to the ferry and a 20-minute crossing? Yes, please.

Everything went well except for when the rain came about. It came and it stayed, stayed, stayed. Our tent was GREAT. Very glad we made that purchase and I want to take it camping a few more times but want to write a review I like it so much. You can stand in the whole tent! Luxury camping is what we like to call it.

Daddy and daughter. So sweet.

Barrett did okay. She napped, but was too excited about her new surroundings to get a really good nap in. Seeing her taking in the trees, sounds, and everything new is such fun. Even the boring underbrush was fascinating to her, which in turn makes it fascinating for me.

Barrett in the Moby Wrap

Melissa with Barrett in the Moby Wrap, Sandwich in her rain gear, and our REI Alcove and Kingdom 4 ... they match!! We are THOSE PEOPLE with the matching camp gear!

I learned from this experience that camping with a baby isn’t a big deal, but it is a pretty big change from camping just us two. We weren’t as free to do what we please, and I didn’t think to bring more than some books to keep me busy. I should have brought knitting, more “fun” books, my drawing book and maybe a toy to play with Sandwich. When it’s raining out and too dreary to make a campfire, I’d much prefer the warmth and cozy of my home to roughing it with baby.

Preparing for Camping With Baby

In celebration of our second anniversary, Bryan and I committed to going camping. Originally we planned to visit the Methow since we love it so much and that’s where we got married (on the banks of Early Winters). Alas, it’s too cold over there at night for a baby. Oh, and Washington Pass is still closed (see awesome photos from WADOT) and who is interested in a 5+ hour drive with baby in tow? Not I.

Our plan is to stay in Twin Harbors campground, out at Westport. If the overnight part of the camping goes well and it’s not pouring rain, Bryan will surf on Saturday. I just hope I can hold it together when/if Barrett decides to have a good long wail when it’s bedtime. Not too much about camping with a 4 1/2-mo-old worries me except for the fact we’ll be outside with no quiet place to take her if she falls apart. This is more of a mental hurdle for me than a fear. Once it happens and I see it’s not so bad, my confidence will rise and this fear will go away.

I don’t think there is much to plan different, camping with baby. We’re going to have all the baby gear in the car but everything else will probably be like normal, right? Cook the same, campfire the same … tent? Ohh yeah … we bought a new tent. It’s kind of ridiculous and I laugh when I think about it, so I wanted to share it here.

REI's Kingdom 6 Tent

We bought a 6-person tent! It’s going to be gloriously huge! Sandwich can have her OWN ROOM for crying out loud! As I said, I think it’s a bit much but I do think we are actually going to like being those guys with that big tent, with our big fat cozy hideout.

Will do a follow-up post to let you know how things turn out with this investment.

Slowly Watching Spring

Being home all day, I have the luxury of witnessing Spring’s arrival in slow motion. This time last year I was consumed by everyday bustle of working, playing, cleaning … living. This year is different. This year, I am trying to take in the moments since my time off is winding down. I am taking time to sit quietly, look out the window, just holding Barrett and feeling her smallness.

I am noticing the buds forming on branches, I am noticing tiny shoots pushing up through the earth. Leaves and flowers find their way toward the sun, slow to greet the world. Each day there is a little more progress made and I can’t help but compare this to the slow progress my daughter is making. She makes changes, so slow that I have to reflect back to notice. It’s easy to be consumed by this little person that Bryan and I created.

I meant to write this post and not include reference to baby. Sometimes that is hard to do since her growing and learning is fascinating to me.

Visiting the Hoh Rainforest

We took off from work a little early on a sunny Friday. The ferry ride plus a long drive out to the end of the Olympic Peninsula made for around five hours of a trip out to the Hoh Rainforest. We didn’t bother stopping along the way except to pick up firewood and made it to the campground with daylight to spare.

Arriving at the campground, we had our pick of which spot to claim – there was nobody else camping yet. A few couples were hanging out around the guest center, but the camping loops were void. We chose a nice spot overlooking the river.

As the sun set, Bryan got to work building a fire and I made some sandwiches. It may have been a glorious warm day, but here in the forest and at night, it was very chilly and the fire was needed to stay warm. I had on every layer I brought including my Ninja Suit – very good choice for this weather.

Bryan and the Hoh, enjoying some coffee

We slept in the back of our car (a typical choice for us), so we stayed warm through the night. I love sleeping in the car. The wedge (Prius) makes for a great skylight to the stars, our heads at the rear and the stars blanketing the sky above. It’s really cozy in there.

Saturday we got an early start. Up and making breakfast & coffee before 8am – we were ready for a couple hikes around the campground. Originally we wanted to hike up the trail heading to the Glacier Meadows, there are a few campgrounds on the way up there and we were going to check one out. But, due to poor planning for lunch supplies, we didn’t have the option to pack in a lunch. Instead, we did the one-mile loop called the Hall of Mosses and then another 1.3 mile loop called the Spruce Nature Trail. Both were very easy, but the Hall of Mosses was the coolest.

The Hoh Rainforest receives 12-14 FEET of rain each year, resulting in some 14 types of mosses

Even the water seemed to have moss in it!

A theme of this visit were the Roosevelt Elk. They were all throughout the park and they were huge and ornery. Rangers passing through advised us to stay at least 100 meters away because they were easily riled and up for a fight. Beautiful creatures.

I would love to come back and visit the Hoh Rainforest again. The mossy grounds and lush trees make it a very comfortable place to visit. Not sure we would like it as much during the high season – there are probably over 80 campspots in this little space. It feels well spread out but that could be due to there being only 4 other campers in with us? I would also be interested in hiking all the way up to the Glacier Meadows near Mt. Olympus. It’s a 37-mile hike round trip, so definitely something to take time off for and visit on its own.

Surfing in February

A couple weekends ago we went snowboarding Saturday and then hit the coast on Sunday. I managed to blog about our little spring skiing session and then got distracted from posting this trip. The weather was amazing! The waves were around 5′ and there was no wind and they were set about 15″ apart. Amazing!

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to get in the water. A shoulder injury from snowboarding last year had rendered me unable to surf last season. I can’t remember the last day I went surfing. So the whole drive out, I was trying to think of how I would keep myself busy while Bryan was in the water. Last summer it was so bad, I could barely paddle and had limited range of motion.

Well, we got out of the car to walk out and check out the scene, and I was delightfully surprised. The sunny weather and cool, calm, peeling waves called to me. I couldn’t say no, and I was SO happy I got in the water. I had the best time!

Planning the Patio Garden

Bryan picked up a new book/magazine for me, the Maritime Gardening in the Northwest. It’s a great guide to gardening and has a good deal of focus on gardening in a yard – using cloches, sowing indoors or under covers and transferring seedlings to the outdoors, keeping your soil healthy. The book covers all these things (and more) in a way that I can find ways to apply what I want to do but in our small condo. A large focus is breaking up the book into chapters by months. Each month tells you what seeds to plant outside or inside, and other activities you could be doing to keep busy with your garden.

I have only read to March, because I want to not get distracted with reading too far ahead. I am trying to plan all that I can plant and nurture on our small patio landing.

draft of our patio garden

At first, my goal with this book is to plan our garden and have more to eat from it than last summer, when we had lettuce, strawberries, rosemary and basil. However, as I read more of this book, I am finding that I am starting to think if I could actually kind of have crops on our patio and exercise crop rotation. That might be taking it too far, might be too much to manage on a little patio.

After I figure out what we can start with in our small space, I’ll move on to figuring out if I can garden through the year with more than one set of veggies and fruit.

Viva Spring Skiing

Mid-February and it feels like April here at Stevens Pass. We didn’t get to the ski hill until the perfect time: sun had just warmed it enough to start the corn snow forming.

I love skiing when it’s sunny! Cruising around, up and down the side walls, taking little jumps when they pop up … Whoops and hollers heading down the mountain and smiles all around.

I’m still hoping for more big snow to fall and gift us some powder days but I’ll take the sunny fun days in between the wait.
